Opportunity Knocks

Opportunity Knocks is an old movie. It starred Dana Carvey. It’s a comedy and a favorite movie of mine.  In life opportunity often does come knocking.  When it does we need to be ready to take advantage of it or… the advantages of opportunities will pass.

Galatians 6:10 says: So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, especially to those who are of the household of faith.   As we have opportunity is a key phrase.  We do not always have opportunity.  Summer is winding down.  Summers are usually busy.  Let me rephrase that: Summers are busy… drop the usually.  Our VBS begins today.  It is our last special activity of the summer.  Before we know it school will start that puts most families into a routine with regular bed times and the sun does not shine nearly as much!  We can see the days growing shorter.  We read in the Bible that we need to work while it is day, night comes when no man can work.  A verse that emphasizes opportunity.

Galatians 6:9 adds the thought let us not grow weary in well-doing.  As the summer winds down many of us have grown weary!  We are tired… work camps… Beechwood Hills camp… VBSs… all have a way making us weary.  We do get tired.  The weariness, however, it not about growing tired. The weariness it is talking about is a weariness of spirit.  It is possible to simply lose interest… lose zeal… lose zest…   We lose that want to spirit.

When we lose that spirit to weariness we let opportunities begin to slip away.  The greatest opportunity in any action is the opportunity to become a better person by the things we do. When we lose opportunity to become a better person we lose a precious chances in life.

So, as summer comes to an end go ahead and grow weary… just don’t grow weary in well- doing!
