Two Sundays ago we noticed Hebrews 4:1 and its exhortation or call to action. This week we will notice the next exhortation to the faithful.
Hebrews 4:11 says: Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.
The KJV says, “Let us labor…” This verse, among many, is in stark contrast the popular religious world. Popular views in religion espouse a grace only doctrine. They would surmise that to labor for anything is to earn one’s salvation. This is a false conclusion and a soul condemning one as well. We sing a song, in our books it is number 634, titled – We will work till Jesus comes. This hymn is not unscriptural in the least. Christians must be working.
The Hebrews writer is exhorting these Christians and us as well to keep on striving, to keep contending for the faith (Jude 3), to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). Jesus also said in John 9:4, “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.” Are you working toward that rest?
