Themes in Proverbs: Folly Brings Dishonor

Proverbs 3:35

The wise will inherit honor, But fools display dishonor.

Solomon, the writer of Proverbs 3, tells us that as we live our life in a wise manner we will gain an inheritance of honor. From where does this honor come? Living a wise life, a godly life, will surely bring honor from those around us but that is not the point of this passage. We may live godly lives and never receive honor from even our closest friends. Honor that follows wise living comes from God. We might ask at this point: How does God honor us? As we live the way we should, God bestows honor upon us in at least one way by blessing us with more than enough:

Proverbs 3:9-10

9  Honor the Lord from your wealth And from the first of all your produce;

10 So your barns will be filled with plenty And your vats will overflow with new wine.

It would seem that everyone would want to be honored by God, to gain this inheritance, to live a wise life. But sadly, such is not the case. Fools, the opposite of the godly living wise, choose to reject God and his ways and boast of their error! They display their dishonor as if it is an accomplishment.

Seeking and acting upon wisdom brings us honor. We are rewarded for following God, the foolish have no one to reward them and so they are left with all that is left – dishonor, shame. The choice is clear… live wisely.
