Themes in Proverbs: Imagery of Animals

The book of Proverbs uses many different animals to convey the message of wisdom to the readers.

We remember from Proverbs 6:6-8, the hard work and preparedness of the ant.

6 Go to the ant,

O sluggard,

Observe her ways and be wise,

7 Which, having no chief,

Officer or ruler,

8 Prepares her food in the summer

And gathers her provision in the harvest.

The dog reminds us of how we can be so foolish – Proverbs 26:11

Like a dog that returns to its vomit

Is a fool who repeats his folly.

Finally, the lion is named in Proverbs 28:1

The wicked flee when no one is pursuing,

But the righteous are bold as a lion.

The lion is regularly mentioned as fierce and daunting, but from this verse we notice an attribute we all should possess – boldness. Sometimes being bold is hard. Sometimes it is frowned upon. Spread the soul saving message of the gospel. Reach out to the down trodden. Live an obedient life. Be bold like a lion!
