Themes in Proverbs: Children, Receive Instruction

Proverbs 1:8-9

8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction
And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
9 Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head
And ornaments about your neck.

The order of the home is displayed in these verses. A home is made up of a father and a mother. Sometimes, because of circumstances outside of our control and sometimes within our control, the household does not look like this. God’s word is clear concerning the model for the home: One man and one woman.

This cohesive unit cares for and provides for their offspring. Part of this nurturing and love is instruction. Parents, this point cannot be stressed enough, instruct your children. This means as parents we have to be, not only setting a biblical example, but we have to have expectations of our children. Psychology today tells what the Bible told us long ago – children need instruction, training, boundaries, and teaching.

Parents the fruit of your labors will be seen, not in physical objects, but in honor if your children are properly instructed. Children that do not receive, or sadly are not taught, will receive dishonor in this life. That lack of instruction cannot bode well for them in the life to come. The job of a parent is not over because your child in not in your home. Continue to instruct and teach – your children need you.
