Themes in Proverbs: Treatment of the Poor

Proverbs 21:13

He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be answered.

Our duty as Christians should always be to do good when we see the opportunity and when the opportunity has not presented itself, then we find a way to do good. We must never shut our ear to the need of the poor.

There are many ways to help the poor. A great way that we impact this community is through our weekly contribution (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). The contribution provides this body with the means to give to those who are in a tough situation. We might note at this point that as much as we are commanded to help those in need, we also have the responsibility to be good stewards of what we have been blessed with. This means that we cannot neglect our own families in the process of trying to help others (1 Timothy 5:8).

More than our monetary giving, we also give time to those in need. Visiting is a great way to accomplish this. Many of our body are shut in and time spent with them or helping them with day to day tasks goes a long way.

The proverbs writer, time and time again, stresses the importance of giving of ourselves. Will our faith in God help us to help others or will that be the job of someone else?
