Themes in Proverbs: Envy

The Bible speaks negatively about any type of envy. Envy is defined as a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck. God’s word also teaches about envying those who practice sin.

Notice the words of the proverbs writer: Do not let your heart envy sinners, But live in the fear of the Lord always (Proverbs 23:17).

We cannot continue in sin (Romans 6:1) now that we have been washed and set apart (1 Corinthians 6:11). Sadly, some are still looking back to a life of sin, turning their eyes away from salvation. They have obeyed the gospel but yearn, yes envy, those who still live in sin. These individuals constantly remind themselves of the limitations of being a Christian instead of the freedom we now enjoy (2 Corinthians 3:17).
