Themes in Proverbs: Pride

The harvest season is among us. The combines are moving through the corn fields. Farmers are filling their barns with hay and straw. Virtually, all of the fruits and vegetables we eat come from the soil of the earth.

Pride is seen throughout the book of proverbs as the soil in which all kinds of wickedness germinate and grow.

Proverbs 16:18-19

Pride goes before destruction,

And a haughty spirit before stumbling.

It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly

Than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Proverbs 18:12

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty,

But humility goes before honor.

The point is clear. If we to please God by keeping a pure heart, by opposing sin, we must have a heart that is free from pride.
