I picked up a book recently that I am enjoying reading entitled, Anyway. It is about 10 Paradoxical Commandments, obviously a play on the 10 Commandments in the Bible. It is a very thought provoking book that challenges you to think and challenges the way you live.
Commandment No. 1 says: People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
I don’t know about you but I find that to be TRUE. At times I find myself being illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. I would appreciate it if you would love me anyway.
I read a true story about a dog that was hit by a car. The dog’s leg was broken in the accident. The dog was in a lot of pain. This sympathetic man stopped… picked her up… and took her to the vet. Do you know what the dog did? It bit the man. He was kind, gentle and trying to help, and the dog bit him!
Have you ever tried to reach out to a person who was hurting? It could be physical pain. It could be emotional pain. It could be just a bad day. You are sympathetic. You are kind. You are gentle. You are trying to help. And, then have that person bite you – ok, not with their mouth and teeth – but a nip, that in some way hurt, just the same. Someone has remarked that hurt people hurt people!!! I have been bitten by a few people in my lifetime.
So, what do you do? First, don’t resist trying to help someone in pain. Yes, they may bite? And, remember when hurting yourself try not to bite others. My computer gives as a synonym for bite – snap at. Have you ever snapped at someone who didn’t deserve it.
Remember the first commandment: People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
